“It Is Clear To Me This Is The Work I Should Be Doing”

A few years ago, I had my own experience of having to be the candidate searching for a new job. I was told by my leadership team that there was no guarantee my position would exist for the upcoming calendar year because of declining business. After the shock wore off, I accepted the separation package and took a couple of months off to rest, relax, and then started my search. I just knew I would land my next position in just a few short weeks with no problem.
Transition
I quickly became disillusioned when I learned what I thought would be an easy job search was not the reality of finding a position in the current job market. I decided I had to use one of the benefits in my package and made a visit to a professional career transitional company where I begin the process of learning how to find a job. I received hours of coaching from experts. I learned how to design and execute a search strategy; I attended several networking sessions, joined and attended meetings of professional HR organizations; and volunteer work helping others who were also in transition.

After several weeks of retooling and interviewing, I landed my next Human Resources position with a growing and privately-owned healthcare company. I felt secure in my role, inspiring change in my role, and doing rewarding work. Until one-month shy of my second service anniversary, I learned once again I would become a causality of a reduction in workforce.
Covid- 19
Because of my previous experience of being told I would be out of work, I quickly moved past the shock and developed a plan to start my new job search. I was feeling good about my search and starting to see progress. That was until COVID-19 hit and brought everything to a halt. I found myself having to adjust my search strategy because of this new and even more competitive employment market.
I have several friends, family, and colleagues who lost their positions because of the COVID-19 shutdown.
A New Reality
They now faced the reality of searching for a new job for the first time in a very long time. Most thought like I initially did because of their background and work tenure, finding a new job would not be an issue. I spent a fair amount of time discussing how I had to change my mindset in searching for a job, and it would be imperative that they do the same to achieve success. For most, my advice has helped. I have always known that helping people was a passion and part of my life’s work. As I assist more and more people with their job search, my excitement continues to grow. It is clear to me that this is the work that I should be doing. And hence, “My Career Partners” was formed.
